Coaching Autistic People through Sport (CAPS)

Sport and fitness have a vital role in promoting our wellbeing and in supporting our physical and mental health, through the creation and achievement of meaningful personal goals.  A key part of this is the opportunity to connect with others with shared interests, build social contacts, and be part of a community.

Autistic children, young people and adults are often denied this opportunity. They commonly experience barriers to sport and fitness settings, and as a result of unmet need for support, are more likely than non-autistic peers to be persistent non-attenders at school. P.E. and games classes are often the first subjects to be dropped, leading to loss of opportunities to be physically and socially active and to regulate.

In terms of physical wellbeing, research shows that autistic people have a higher risk of developing diabetes and heart disease in later life and commonly experience other physical difficulties. These include gastrointestinal issues, migraines, skin conditions, chronic fatigue syndrome, hypermobility, and endometriosis. In terms of mental health, severe anxiety and depression are commonly experienced, alongside significant sleep problems and psychological distress,  and a reported higher risk of suicide and self harm.

However, we believe that access to a supportive, inclusive fitness setting can be a positive feature to support wellbeing and a protective factor for mental and physical health.

AT-Autism has partnered with Strong Path to design and develop a new course specifically for anyone involved in teaching sport and fitness, as we know it is people who make the difference. We work with a range of instructors, from fitness coaches, sports managers, gym instructors, to PE and trainee primary teachers – anyone involved in teaching sport and fitness – and adapt our content to suit your setting.
